The opening date for this year’s annual Char Dham pilgrimage in Uttarakhand is expected to be May 07 and will coincide with the auspicious ‘Akshaya Tritya’ festival. Akshaya Tritya, which falls on the third Tithi (lunar day) of Bright Half (Shukla Paksha) in the month of Vaisakha of the Hindu calendar, is a pious day for the Hindus and Jains. According to officials, the pilgrim sites will be formally opened to devotees by reopening the Gangotri and the Yamunotri shrines, which are located in the Garhwal Himalayas.
The other two shrines constituting the Char Dham, the Kedarnath and the Badrinath shines are expected to open respectively on May 09 and May 11. But since the two shrines are located at high altitudes and are subject to extreme cold conditions, they will remain closed in winters.
